Lake Park board gets new member
She felt like a natural, chatting with board members and asking questions. Joan DiPiero, of Bloomingdale, took the Lake Park High School District 108 school board’s oath of office Monday. She has replaced Katherine Wienberg, who resigned earlier this year and moved out of the district. “Everybody makes you feel comfortable and I know a lot about the school already,” she said. But she added that there’s still a lot left to learn, especially when it comes to the complex budget process and rules that taxing bodies must obey. For the most part, DiPiero feels confident in her new duties. She has been an active member of the Lake Park community for a few years. Her involvement includes work on the district’s strategic planning committee, Lake Park Partners for Education committee, Booster Club and the Lake Park Foundation. In her new role, she hopes to heighten the district’s profile and vowed to represent the taxpayers to the best of her ability. “I feel responsible to the community,” she said. “I want to bring ownership to the community. I want everyone to feel it’s their school.” DiPiero, who works as an administrative assistant for a law firm, has experience in the field of public relations. In the past, she worked as a community relations consultant for various educational institutions. Her past experiences include working on referendum campaigns, recruiting students for community colleges and universities and designing outreach programs for non-English speakers and special needs children. When asked what she would do different if she could go back to high school, DiPiero joked that she wouldn’t have gone to an all-girls Catholic school. But then she seriously added: “I enjoyed school very much and I don’t think I would do much different.” DiPiero has lived in Bloomingdale for about 10 years with her husband Vince and their two children — Anthony, 18, and Mary Therese, 13. Her husband attended the meeting to support her. “I am very proud,” he said.
